Finally an article on email campaigns which is easy to understand. However being a novice on this topic is email "opened" is something which is not captured then how is the success calculated? I hope this question is not as silly as it sounds.

The success in Marketo isn't captured until you change a person's program status to one of the success steps using the Change Program Status flow. You can have a campaign setup that'd change the progression step of a person as soon as a certain activity is logged, e.g., person fills out a particular form.
